Reiki Books  (1997 - 2003)

This is an annotated bibliography listing of the majority of English Language Reiki Books by:
Walter Keoki Quan
Victoria, British Columbia (Canada) "A large part of my Reiki practise is spent accumulating books in English on Reiki. This is a listing of books I have found and/or purchased or have seen in passing.  "Notes" consist of my opinions (generally) - I encourage people to read the books for themselves to see if the information therein "rings" for them. Please send any corrections to me - additions to the list welcome, but it means I'll be behind again! Thanks to Richard Rivard for hosting this listing on this site. " Walter Quan   (all comments are Walter's except RR - Richard Rivard).

O-Sensei:
A View of Mikao Usui
King, Dave Self Published 100 pages
7.5 x 5 inches
July, 2006
A personal viewpoint of the Usui System as taught to Dave King over a span of more than 30 years. Much of the information was provided by Tenon-In, one of five Buddhist nuns who had worked with Usui between 1920 and 1926. Additional material was provided by several other surviving students of Usui as well as his Japanese teachers Onuki-sensei and Tatsumi-sensei. Within its 100 pages can be found information on the events preceding the creation of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and the Hayashi Reiki Ryoho Kenkyu-kai as seen through the eyes of some of his surviving students. Within the book can be found diagrams and tables outlining the development of the system and an insight into the origin of the term "Reiki" that has become associated with Usui's teachings.

Usui Reiki Ryoho:
Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden Japanese Reiki Workshop Manual
Rivard, Richard
Rigler, Tom
Self Published Ring bound
156 pages
8.5 x 11 in.
June 2000
Notes: A Revised edition of the Workshop Manual given with Japanese Sensei Hiroshi Doi's August 1999 seminar in Vancouver, Canada.  Updated with photos for all techniques.
This manual is given with Richard and Tom's workshops. An additional section (not in this manual) is also provided in the Shinpiden Teacher section of the workshop. RR
Modern Reiki Method for Healing Doi, Hiroshi Fraser Journal Publishing 206 pp, 7.5 x 5 inches 0-9688100-0-4
December 2000

Notes: Hiroshi Doi was trained in Reiki as taught in the West and has been involved in Reiki as it was kept in Japan.  His own modern method (Gendai Reiki-ho) synthesizes the two streams into a complete whole.  The book discusses many of the questions which are now being asked about Reiki and its evolution since Usui’s death in 1926, and resolves a number of points of historical significance.  The book also introduces Reiki techniques as currently practised in Japan.

(The FIRST modern Japanese Reiki book translated into English. This is one of the best Reiki books published to date (IMHO).  Sensei Hiroshi Doi presents his combined Western and Japanese methods of Reiki in a modern day style, based on his own training with traditional Japanese masters, as well as Radiance and Takata-sensei styles.  Doi Sensei is the only known published master to have studied with a URR Gakkai chairperson, a Taketomi lineage sensei, as well as one of Dr. Hayashi's students.  Doi-sensei presents the latest known facts of the origins of Reiki and also provides interesting new techniques from his Japanese Reiki training and his own personally designed style. This book has been very well received in Japan, as well as here in the West in it's pre-launch distribution. RR  (click here for book details))

Practical Reiki - A Practical Step by Step Guide to this Ancient Healing Art Hall, Mari Thorsons - An Imprint of Harper Collins, London & California 150 pp, 8.5 x 6 inches 0-7225-3465-5
1997
Notes: A comprehensive book giving history and general information, general and specific treatment information, practical uses and the use of Reiki with other healing techniques. The book is worth getting for the pictures of people using Reiki in a group - they're having so much fun, it's quite a joy! The book also lists Reiki organizations worldwide, and tells a bit of Mari's story. She teaches and treats in the Czech Republic.
  .  .
Reiki Fire Petter, Frank Arjava Lotus Light Publications, Twin Lakes, Wisconsin 128 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-914955-50-0
1997
Notes: Like Rick says - important information for many folks who wish to understand historical roots of Reiki, even if they're happy with their current practise. I find that in the two short years of having the book, I've internalized a good part of this teaching - that's something!
{Contains new information on Mikao Usui from 3 Japanese sources, including students of Kyozou Ogawa, one of Usui's students. Shows pictures of Usui's grave site and monument with a translation of the inscription of the monument. The rest of the book gives a general picture of Reiki, the levels, hand positions, a session, etc. It is well thought out and presented. RR}

The Joy of Reiki Nalin Nerrla Full Circle Press New Delhi, India ? pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 81-216-00673-X
1997

Tera, My Journey Home: Alternate Healing for the Body and Spirit Kathleen Milner Self, Arizona 188 pp, 8.5 x 11 inches 1-886903-89-1
1997
Notes: Kathleen Milner works well in a story-telling kind of format. A number of chapters deal with personal experiences which she uses to discuss issues like "good and evil", reincarnation, Hawaiian Shamanism, Brazilian Shamanic Healing, Iridology and Initiation and Meditation. Of interest to Reiki-folk are chapters on her Tera-MaiÔ Seichem healing, and on symbols.
  .  .
Reiki with Gemstones Ursula Klinger-Omenka Lotus Light, Shangri-La 122 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-914955-29-2
1997
Notes: A lovely volume which describes the basics of Reiki and the usages of crystals and gemstones within treatments. Of particular note are her treatment instructions which use seven like-gemstones at one time for particular healing colour rays.
  .
Principles of Reiki Kasja Krishni Borang Thorsons, Harper Collins 114 pp, 8 x 5.5 inches 0-7225-3406-X
1997
Notes: A book by a student of Wanja Twan. Provides basic information about Reiki and its practise - hand positions, case studies, work with animals, principles etc etc. There is a nice feeling about this work as it keeps an emphasis on lineage and the transfer of information.
(Of interest is the note Kasja makes about the Polish Catholic Nun, also a Reiki Master, who has a framed letter on her wall from the Pope, giving her permission to practice Reiki. RR)
Lost Steps of Reiki: The Channeled Messages of Wei Chi Thomas Hensel/Kevin Emery LightLines Publishing;  58 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches
spiral bound
1-89040502-7
May 1997
Notes: Starting at Christmas, 1985, Kevin Emery received channellings from Wei Chi, an entity who asserts that he created the symbols used in Reiki five thousand years ago, in India.  The book outlines Wei Chi’s Reiki system - one which focuses on a specific model for healing sessions, as well as learning Reiki through a mode of self-empowerment.  Wei Chi (and his channel - I do not believe it possible to separate the two) provide strong critiques of Reiki teaching as they currently view it which, perhaps, gets in the way of a good description of a more universal philosophy about Reiki as a personal practise.
  .
Reiki - A practical guide to heal over 230 physical disorders Nazareth, Martin Book Quest Publishers, Mumbai, India 116 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 81-86025-08-1
1996, enlarged and revised 1997
Notes:  A basic Reiki book which does include the notion of updating the traditional stories and a version of the history as provided by the Usui memorial - some symbols are named but not shown.  Hand positions are described and discussed quite extensively.  Point of view is quite personal and includes lots of exhortations in bold face and/or capital letters.  Nazareth does frequently suggest that Reiki is to be experienced rather than explained…
Reiki Mystery School: Transformational Reiki Karyn Mitchell, Steven Mitchell, Robert Tentinger Mind Rivers Publishing, Oregon, IL 220 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-9640822-5-X
1998
Notes: A whole bunch of information (!) which Karyn Mitchell offers to seekers on the path. She offers her materials as tastes of philosophies and teachings which have a connection to Reiki. There's an awful lot to work through in this volume - the esoterica seems, in fact, somewhat overwhelming. Still, people may find bits or chapters or information which does ring for them and could enhance their practise or their path.

One Degree Beyond: A Reiki Journey Into Energy Medicine
(2nd ed)
Narrin, Janeanne Little White Buffalo Publishing Cottage
Seattle WA
314 pp, 9 x 7.5 inches 0-9658545-4-X
1998
Notes: Wow! Imagine Reiki meets the Artist's Way. The surtitle says, "Your 21 Day Step By Step Guide to Relax, Open and Celebrate…", and indeed, the author does provide information, experiences, and lots of exercises (which will go much beyond 21 days) to open readers to think about various aspects of Reiki and their own lives. I was never happy, for instance, in doing the "Course in Miracles" work (day by day), but the exercises provided are more focused and more interesting to my practise and my life (and I'm not finished with them all by any means yet!). The new-accounting of the traditional story of Reiki is about the best I've seen - it's non-judgmental and pensive. There are also a lot of wonderful margin notes throughout the text with quotes, or asides which really add to the work.
  .
The Power of Reiki: An Ancient Hands-On Healing Technique Honervogt,Tanmaya Henry Holt and Company, Inc.
New York
144 pp, 10 x 7.5 inches 0-8050-5559-2
1998
Notes: This is a basic text by a Reiki Master based in Devon, England. What distinguishes it is that at any point in the book, there is a glorious, full-colour photo, picture or diagram which illustrates the text. The colours are stunning, and the nature photos for 'non-Reiki' diagrams are also enhancing of a sensual experience of reading a book.
(I agree with Walter's review - although the Reiki history presented is not the up-to-date version, this book sets a new standard for presentation in Reiki books. RR)
  .  .
Traditional Reiki for Our Times: Practical Methods for Personal and Planetary Healing Rowland, Amy Z. Healing Arts Press
Rochester, Vermont
230 pp, 10 x 8 inches 0-89281-777-1
1998
Notes: Along with basic information about Reiki (hand positions, levels, history), the author provides much food for thought in a philosophical kind of way which places Reiki and its practise in a contemporary context. There is an interesting section (though small) about other kinds of Reiki.
  .
Reiki: A Practical Guide Waites, Bill & Naharo, Master Astrolog Publishing House
Israel
128 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 965494046-9
1998
Notes: The author recounts his path with Reiki and his lineage through an Indian Reiki Master, Master Naharo. The author recounts a number of "traditional practises" and fairly 'strict' approaches which I've never actually seen before. They bear some consideration. One of these systems is where Reiki and "Marma" points intersect - the author provides descriptions of these 52 points which seem to be related to accupuncture and meridian work.
  .
Reiki: A Beginner's Guide Shuffrey, Sandi Leir Hodder & Stoughton Educational
Hodder Headline Plc
London, England
90 pp, 8 x 5 inches 0-340-72081-6
1998
Notes: Basic text by a student of a student of Wanja Twan. The book and information seems to follow the current language that is used by Phyllis Furumoto and the Reiki Alliance. I was disappointed that there were hand position descriptions but no diagrams for those positions.
Reiki: The Legacy of Dr. Usui Petter, Frank Arjava Lotus Light
Shangri-La
124 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-914955-56-X
1998
Notes: Subtitled, "Rediscovered documents on the origins and developments of the Reiki system as well as new aspects of the Reiki Energy." This newest book provides excerpts in translation from Mikao Usui's Handbook for Reiki, including questions and answers and poetry which Usui gave to his students. The author does a numerological and astrological analysis of Usui, but also gives the history of Reiki as it was passed on in Japan. The rest of the book provides some thinking about various issues of healing, and recounts the author's path as he has come to Reiki and to be an important contributor to contemporary information on Reiki as it's been kept as a tradition in Japan.
(I was very happy to see the first translation of the Usui Reiki Hikkei, but asked Arjava what happened to the Healing Guide Table.  - apparently this somehow missed the publishing, but ended up in his next book.  It is very moving to read Usui Sensei's actual explanation of Reiki, plus his bonus Q & A section. 14 of the 125 Gyosei - Meiji Emperor's poems - are also presented. RR)

(Ordering Source not available)
Reiki: The essential guide to the ancient healing art Parkes, Chris and Penny  Vermilion, London (England) 160 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches  0-09-181-6432
1998
Notes: From England, a basic book about Reiki - lots of information about the (western) traditional understandings of Reiki - the banner across the bottom corner of the cover says, "Featuring the Original Usui Method".  Good illustrations, some good discussion topics for practitioners.
  .
Reiki at Hand Collins, Teresa The Collins Press, Cork, Ireland 180 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches  1-898256-40-3
1998
Notes: The first book from Ireland on Reiki.  With Symbols (non-traditional, but recognizable Master's Symbol), no instruction on how to do attunements, but full class outlines for all levels.  As a "cultural difference", I have to giggle every time I read the instructions for the night between the two days of a level I workshop: "Each participant is asked to take not more than two alcoholic drinks and no artificial drugs other than standard medication before returning to the workshop the following day."  It takes all kinds, and I bet it works!
  .
Reiki for a New Millennium Rand, William Lee  Vision Publications, Southfield, MI 166pp, 6 x 9 inches  1-886785-02-3
1998
Notes: A collection of articles which mostly appeared first in Rand's quarterly newsletter, "Reiki News".  They run a range from Reiki for practitioners, to the 'newly discovered' histories of Reiki as it's been kept in Japan.  If you have a fairly complete set of "Reiki News", you don't actually need to have this volume, but it's nice that the articles are all in one place.
Healing Reiki - Reunite Mind, Body and Spirit with Healing Energy McKenzie, Eleanor Ulysses Press, Berkeley, CA 128 pp, 10 x 7.5 inches 1-56975-162-5
1998
Notes:  Originally published in the UK, this book includes a foreward and commentary quotations from Don Alexander as well.  Beautifully photo-illustrated, the book presents treatment and hand positions, as well as philosophy around treatment and Reiki in a contemporary age.  The photo illustrations are very beautiful and capture a spirit and feeling of Reiki which could be excellent for encouraging newbies to “try it out”.
Reiki A Way of Life Upczak, Patricia Rose  Synchronicity Publishing, Nederland, Colorado 99 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches  1-891554-18-2
1999
Notes:NOT a basic book - hurrah! - there is a photo-illustrated section of how to do a basic treatment, but the bulk of this book is think pieces, followed by meditations for Reiki as a way of life.  The author mentions various sources including A Course in Miracles.  Chapters include topics such as "Gratitude and Reverence", and "Signs, Symbols and Synchronicities", as well as others too numerous and wondrous to mention.
  .
Reiki : A Piatkus Guide  Quest, Penelope  Judy Piatkus (Publishers)  148 pp, 5 x 7.75  inches  0-7499-1935-3
1999
Notes: A new book from England – basic information about Reiki and includes the traditional and updated histories.  Pretty standard stuff for basic Reiki books these days – there are illustrations of hand positions provided
  .
Practical Reiki : Focus Your Body's Energy for Deep Relaxation and Inner Peace Ellis, Richard Sterling Publications Company, Inc. New York 128 pp, 10.5 x 7.5 inches 0-8069-6807-9
October 1999
Notes: Yet another beautifully-photo-illustrated book on Reiki originating from the UK.  Lots of teachings and examples about healing and intuition as well as a fairly detailed description of what to expect at any level of Reiki training.  Ellis still cites the olde history of Reiki.  Stunning flower photos to illustrate the chakras as well.
  .
The Original Handbook of
Dr. Mikao Usui
Usui, Dr. Mikao & Petter, Frank Arjava Lotus Press -Shangri-la, Twin Lakes, WI  80 pp, 9 x 6.25 inches  0914955578
December 1999
Notes: Arjava Petter and his wife Chetna Kobayashi have provided a translation and new photos of Dr. Usui’s original hand positions for use in Reiki healing.  Also provided is a new context for the practice of Reiki in the style traditionally kept in Japan.  This includes Gassho (hands in prayer position), Reiji-Ho (intuitively guided hands) and other techniques which have not been part of the training in ‘western’ Reiki.
(Actually a continuation of the Usui Reiki Hikkei (workbook) that Arjava began in his previous book "Reiki: The Legacy of Dr. Usui".  This one contains the Ryoho Shishin section (Guide to a Method of Healing) - Usui Sensei's hand positions for various body parts and illnesses (for the beginning Reiki student).  Arjava has done an excellent job of photos and diagrams for the hand positons and body parts.  My only regret is that he did not present the entire Hikkei as one booklet. Still, another wonderful addition to any Reiki collection. RR)
  .
Reiki for Beginners - Mastering Natural Healing Techniques Vennells, David F. Llewellyn Publications, St.Paul MN 224 pp, 8 x 5.25 inches 1-56718-767-6
1999
Notes:  A very open-feeling basic book about Reiki - this includes the traditional history-story, as well as a description of Reiki history from Usui’s memorial stone.  Vennells touches on Buddhist ideals and offers some meditation suggestions as well.
Reiki for Common Ailments: A Practical Guide to Healing Hall, Mari Piatkus, London 234 pp, 8.5 x 5.25 inches 0749920661
1999
Notes: A book which includes great descriptions of anatomical and physiological systems associated with various ailments, as well as their non-physical (i.e. chakras) connections and associated affirmations.  Standard hand positions, personal testimonies and stories and a comprehensive list of ailments make this book a standout.
All Love - A guidebook to Healing with Sekhem-Seichim-Reiki and SKHM Shewmaker, Diane Ruth Celestial Wellspring Publications, Beaverton, OR 166 pp, 11 x 8.5 inches 0-9674135-1-6
1999
Notes: A comprehensive manual and guide to the Sekhem-Seichim-Reiki and SKHM healing system.  Provides a history of the origins of this branch/system of Reiki, as well as instruction, symbols and attunement information.  The only book on this modality - clearly written and well-thought-out.
Reiki - A practical guide to applying Reiki to everyday life and situations Dupont, Chantal Pocket Healing Books:Astrolog Publishing House - Israel 72 pp, 6.25 x 4.25 inches 965-494-102-3
2000
Notes:  Old history, principles, hand positions (no diagrams), chakras, symbols (named but not printed), including Krona Reiki (sic).  Even though modest in price, I can’t recommend this booklet - it does not provide any particularly useful information compared to others out there…
Reiki For The Soul: 10 Doorways to Inner Peace Hall, Mari Thorsons, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, London 158 pp, 8.5 x 8 inches (Hardcover!) 072253891x
April 2000
Notes: Mari’s done it again!  A beautiful and well-designed book which provides excellent points of departure for personal and/or spiritual growth.  Ten “doorways” for self discovery are carefully described (complete with self-work within the texts) as are “stepping stones” which help in looking at change and issues.  Some day, this book will be a well-thumbed and well-notated part of my library.

An Introduction to Reiki: Healing Energy for Mind, Body and Spirit Lambert, Mary
Parkes, Chris
Collins & Brown Limited, London 96 Pages | 7.75 x 9.25 in 1855857472
April 2000
Notes: Another beautifully photo-illustrated book from the UK.  Traditional history is presented, as well as hand positions, chakras, and some specific positions for specific ailments.
Aura-Reiki: A Practical Guide for Using Reiki to Heal the Aura Waites, Bill ASTROLOG 128 Pages 5.25 x 8 in  9654941074
June 2000
Notes: Not yet reviewed by Walter.
  .
Teach Yourself Reiki Shuffrey, Sandi Leir Teach Yourself Books, London   184 pp, 7.75 x 5 inches 0658008994
July 2000
Notes: A reworking of Shuffrey’s previous book - this comes specifically from the Reiki Alliance  mode of teaching (aspects and elements).  Traditional history is given, with a grudging acknowledgment of newer information.  Good hand position diagrams, and description of initiation, as well as some personal stories and testimonies…
.  .
Archetypal Reiki - spiritual, emotional and physical healing May, Dorothy Journey Editions, an imprint of Periplus Editions (HK) Ltd., Boston, MA 112 pp, 6.5 x 6 inches with a set of 28 cards, 3 x 2.75 inches 1-885203-90-x
2000
Notes:  This book is only available with a set of 28 cards.  The package is similar, in some respects, to tarot or rune stones - the deck consists of four subsets (of seven cards), including the names of Reiki symbols, attributes desired in spiritual work, places of spiritual power and the chakras.  An interesting addition to the collections of Reiki things out there - I’m not all that convinced of these tools within a Reiki practice as divinatory or guiding, but for some, they will provide great points of departure for deepening of spiritual growth…
  .
Reiki and the Healing Buddha Kelly, Maureen J. Lotus Press, Twin Lakes WI 212 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-914955-92-6
2000
Notes:  This book contains an extensive discussion and description of the Healing Buddha and Buddhist connections to Reiki (or is it Reiki connections to Buddhism?).  Numerous diagrams and illustrations cover many of these aspects, including Buddhist approaches to the Reiki symbols and attunements and even to the traditional Reiki history/story.  The most interesting chapter is an interpretation of the Buddhist healing mandala and a connection to the Reiki degrees.
.
Medicine Dharma Reiki Yeshe, Lama (Blackwell, Richard) Full Circle Publishing, Delhi, India 324 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 81-7621-081-1
2000
Important Note: See Paula Horan's concerns re. these teachings. Walter's comments below were made prior to this information. Also see Blackwell's web site (no longer active - sorry) where he explains that the content of the book was actually channeled.

Notes: (These are Walter's original comments before we discovered new info above on the book).
Subtitled, "an Introduction to the Secret Inner Practices With Extensive Excerpts from Dr. Usui’s Journals.";  From a set of boxes, (obtained in post-war 1946 Japan by the author’s father) came the 1993 discovery that the boxes contained texts, commentaries, journals and personal papers of Dr. Usui, and his chief student, Kioshi Itami Watanabe.  Using modern (and quite liberal) translations of these papers, Lama Yeshe describes the background and history of Buddhist Healing; provides a glimpse of the character and lectures of Usui, the teacher and healer, and of his student, Watanabe.  The book would assert that Reiki as currently taught is the lay version (as adapted by Usui) of fairly specific and strict Buddhist practice surrounding the Medicine King Buddha.  Probably the most significant book since Stein…
(At least 2 of Usui Sensei's students who are still alive as of 2002 have recently been sharing original Usui-Do teachings with Western students. One of these Usui-Do students is 105 and worked with Sensei from 1920 -26. She states that Sensei was not a doctor, that he and family moved to Tokyo in 1922, that he was Tendai until his death. However, Usui's brother, Sanya, was a medical doctor in Tokyo.  RR)

Reiki Boräng, Kajsa Krishni Thorsons, First Directions, London 90 pp, 7 x 6.75 inches (hardcover) 0-00-710338-7
Notes: Using text derived from Borang’s previous, “Principles of Reiki” (1997), Thorsons has added lush photos and a compact, yet deluxe, format.  This might make a nice gift book, although for information-sharing, there are lots of other volumes which would be bette.
Reiki: Practical Ways to Harmony Hall, Mari Thorsons, Harper Collins, London 204 pp, 9.25 x 10.25 inches (hardcover) 0-00-710124-4
2000
Notes: Using text from Hall’s previous “Practical Reiki” (1997), Thorsons has added lush photos and a large deluxe format.  The photos and colours add to Hall’s wise and thorough text – hand positions, chakras, degrees and history are all well-described, and the sections of the book are remarkable in their colour-coding by pages.  I do miss the photo of the group Reiki-treatments, but the previous volume is also still available.
Reiki Healing: How to channel the power of universal love Fernandez, Carmen Lorenz Books (Anness Publishing) London 96 pp, 12 x 9.25 inches (hardcover) 0-7548-0462-3
2000
Notes: Another pretty, large format book with gorgeous full-colour photos and nicely-designed layout.  Glosses over the history and does publish second degree symbols (but not the third degree symbol).  Text does not really add to the body of work out there, but a nice volume for the coffee table.
The Spirit of Reiki: The complete Handbook of the Reiki System Lübeck, Walter; Petter, Frank Arjava; Rand, William Lee Lotus Press, Shangri-La, Twin Lakes WI 304 pp, 8.5 x 5.375 inches 0-914955-67-5
2001
Notes: The sub-sub-title is: “From Tradition to the Present: Fundamental, Lines of Transmission, Original Writings, Mastery, Symbols, Treatments, Reiki as a Spiritual Path in Life and Much More”
Three of the more/most? prominent Reiki teachers come together to share many ideas and essays about a vast and comprehensive number of topics and issues in Reiki.  These include Japanese Reiki techniques; discussions of symbols (including of the Reiki words themselves); Histories; English translations of the 125 Meiji Emperor’s waka (poems); cross-cultural information (how to behave in Japan) and as the sub-sub-title says, “Much More”.  I find the work a little disjoint as the essays jump from author to author and each has his own writing style.  (Lubeck and Petter provide good information on Japanese approaches to Reiki – Rand discusses Reiki in a modern/”western” millieu.)  There is much to be studied in this volume – it feels quite comprehensive and will provide answers or starting points for discussion about many issues in contemporary Reiki practise.
Self-Healing Reiki: Freeing the Symbols, Attunements and Techniques Emerson, Barbara Frog, Ltd. Berkeley, CA 142 pp, 9 x 7.5 inches 1-58394-035-9

2001

Notes:     Further subtitled: "Your complete home study course for Reiki I, Reiki II and Reiki Master." This book is provided as a complete home study course, to be used with (or without) an accompanying video. Either way, Emerson promises attunements and instruction without physically meeting the student (i.e. the purchaser of the book). The book is imbued with a sense of justifying making the information known freely and also allowing Reiki to evolve and change. Unfortunately, she does make factual errors (for instance, citing Usui as a Christian, and citing Takata's invention of hand positions), and still clings to the notion of the necessity of exchange for healing services. She states that she is unconcerned over the exact way that symbols are drawn, which is good because the drawings of the symbols in her book are certainly non-standard. Finally - although she states that she honours (her) students who've chosen this path and that "I am here for you", there is NO contact information provided for the author/teacher.
Secrets of Reiki Anne Charlish, Angela Robertshaw Natural Health Magazine  DK Publishing Inc, NY/ The Ivy Press Ltd. 5.5 x 4.5 inches
224 pages
0789477807
2001
Notes: Great colourful pictures illustrate many concepts and ideas. Contrary to current "styles" of "secrets revealed", this book does not share symbols or attunement techniques or any of the traditionally-kept secret
teachings.  It provides some solid looks at treatment (and hand positions) and philosophy and practise of Reiki in the new century.
The Complete Reiki Course Master Naharo Astrolog Pub Hous   9654941198
October 2001
Notes: (not reviewed yet by Walter) Please read the review at Amazon before buying this one.  The book seemes to teach a very unusual form of Reiki.
Inner Reiki : A Practical Guide for Healing and Meditation Honervogt, Tanmaya  Henry Holt & Company, Inc.   080506690X
(October 2001)
Notes: (not reviewed yet by Walter) The back cover notes: "Inner Reiki will help you: learn how to develop your Reiki power; access your intuitive and healing powers for personal growth and for the care of others; understand how the Reiki symbols work and how to use them for healing, spiritual growth and meditation."  There is a review on this at Amazon.com.
The Tao of Reiki: A Transpersonal Pathway to an Ancient Healing Art Ellyard, Lawrence  Full Circle Publishing, Delhi, India 356 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 81-7621-004-8
2001
Notes: A mix of information in a comprehensive volume. Part I includes excerpts, courtesy of Lama Yeshe (Richard Blackwell), of materials from Usui's Diaries. Part II includes lots and lots of information about Reiki and healing. Includes symbols and information (published) as well as basics of Medicine Buddha practise. Part II seems to be curriculum for Australian Institute for Reiki Healing.
Reiki Rising: A New Perspective Smillie, Wendy Amethyst Press, Oberon, NSW (Australia) 252 pp,
8.25 x 5.875 inches
0-646-37198-3
Notes: Quite a solidly-told, personal understanding of Reiki and how it can impact on our lives and practises.  Much information is presented on many metaphysical and physical areas.  Interesting information on being a student of AJ MacKenzie Clay - this, of course, means that her presentation of the history is not completely traditional either!
Reiki: A Gift of Love Daxter, Brian and Daxter, Carole  Inspirational Communications, KALAMUNDA Western Australia 126 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-9586516-0-4
1995
Notes: Standard information (personally presented) of traditional understandings of the history and lineage of Reiki.  Lots of personal testimony as to the power of Reiki in people's lives.
Reiki: A Unique Art of Healing Malvai, Sukhdeepak Gyan Publishing House, New Delhi 210 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 81-212-0610-3
1998
Notes: Standard information and standard history.  Great line
diagrams of standard hand positions and of positions to treat various
ailments.  Includes an interesting chapter on body psychology and emotion
centres.
Reiki: A Spiritual Pathway Priest, Jude The Oracle Press, QLD, Australia 192 pp, 8 x 5.75 inches 1-876494-34-4
2000
Notes: Another master with a lineage through Clay. Great information on spiritual development as it relates to Reiki (or is that the other way around?!). The author explains her own path and how Reiki has affected her life. Names symbols but doesn't print them. Also good commentary on mastery, masters, mastership and more…
Inner Reiki: A Practical Guide for Healing and Meditation Honervogt, Tanmaya Henry Holt and Company - An Owl Book; New York 144 pp, 7.5 x 10 inches 0-8050-6690-X
2001
Notes: Pretty book, great colours (the chakras, of course) - interesting and varied meditations on all aspects of reiki, chakras et al. Includes many moving (physically, as well as emotionally) meditations. Discussions of the symbols without revealing them
Wonders of Reiki: A complete book on Reiki Healing Gupta, Kanchan Kitab Publishing House, New Delhi 64 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 81-86950-26-5
2000
Notes: A simple, basic, almost-pamphlet-like book. Still cites Usui as a Christian but also acknowledges other lineages of Reiki beyond the standard Western one. The book also mixes some Indian philosophy and lore to describe bare bones basics of Reiki. Line drawings seem to be copied from Rand. Collectible, but not profound…
The Ancient Science and Art of Reiki Healing Mann, R.S. and Mann, Jyotie Gyan Saga Publications, Delhi Pages 146 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 81-7685-018-7
no dates c2000
Notes: A collection of physiology information, plus general information on attitude and healing and energy bodies. Includes a direct lift of materials from Louise Hay (affirmations and ailments section).
The Book on Karuna Reiki®: Advanced Healing Energy for Our Evolving World Gaia, Laurelle Shanti  Infinite Light Healing Studies Center, Inc.  Hartsel, CO  160 pp, 7.5 x 9 inches  0-9678721-2-x
2001
Notes: As the title says, this is THE book on Karuna Reiki.  Although it does not publish the symbols which are part of this reiki modality, it does give comprehensive information about each one and its use.  If you are without notes or a manual (or even if you have them), this book is useful, clear and heartfelt.
The Complete Reiki Course Naharo, Master and Radford, Gail  Astrolog Publishing House - The Quality of Life Series; Israel  240 pp, 6.5 x 9.5 inches  965494119-8
2001
Notes: I am uncertain of Master Naharo's qualifications, but I cannot recommend this book - this is also an opinion on Amazon by someone else, completely unrelated to me…  The book claims that by reading it and becoming familiar with 12 symbols (which do not necessarily look like any symbols known to most reiki practitioners) and committing to the five principles (which are amazingly intact) that the reader can self-initiate.  The symbols are simply "wrong" and I have a reasonable tolerance for 'variant' symbols…  The information is dogmatic, misleading and unique to this teacher and his writer.  It does give the purported "marma" points from his previous book with Waites (1998) which I still find of interest, but these are available in the other book.
Reiki: 108 Questions and Answers: Your Dependable Guide for a Lifetime of Reiki Practice Horan, Paula  Full Circle, Delhi  148 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches  81-7621-034-X
1998, subsequent reprints
Notes: One of the first published Reiki Masters returns to publishing texts on Reiki based on her years of practice and teaching.  This contains great information which is comparatively up to date (especially seeing as in 1998, information about non-Takata lineage was rare!).  Good, thoughtful answers to common questions
The Ultimate Reiki Touch: Initiation and Self Exploration as Tools for Healing Horan, Paula  Full Circle, Delhi  222 pp, 8.5 x 11 inches  81-7621-048-X
1999, second edition 2000
Notes: As well as good general information about Reiki positions levels and origins, this book features "practice sessions" consisting of three 21-day cycles for each of seven topics.  These topics include: Motivation; Initiation; Simplicity; Commitment; Love; Awareness; and Touch..  There are poems interspersed as well as good drawings.  The Author's overall approach is that of self-discovery in the tradition of Ramana Marharshi and his lineage of students.  It's good stuff!
Core Empowerment: A Course in the Power of the Heart, with commentaries for Advanced Reiki Practitioners Horan, Paula  Full Circle, Delhi  224 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches  81-7621-029-3
1998, reprinted 2001
Notes: Core Empowerment is a training program developed by Paula Horan and "was devised to help participants drop the machinations of the head and feel from Heart, in order to heighten awareness and dissolve unnecessary mental and emotional patterns."  The book is a true synthesis of Reiki and "Self-Inquiry" as in the tradition of Ramana Maharshi, combined with aspects of Tibetan buddhism.  The chapters are paired with lessons in core empowerment and powerful considerations which include Reiki.  This is not easy work, but may result in a kind of enlightenment, or at least an enlightened approach
