 A
personal viewpoint of the Usui System as taught to Dave King over a
span
of more than 30 years. Much of the information was provided by
Tenon-In,
one of five Buddhist nuns who had worked with Usui between 1920 and
1926.
Additional material was provided by several other surviving students of
Usui as well as his Japanese teachers Onuki-sensei and Tatsumi-sensei.
Within its 100 pages can be found information on the events preceding
the
creation of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and the Hayashi Reiki Ryoho
Kenkyu-kai
as seen through the eyes of some of his surviving students. Within the
book can be found diagrams and tables outlining the development of the
system and an insight into the origin of the term "Reiki" that has
become
associated with Usui's teachings.

Notes: Hiroshi Doi was trained in Reiki as taught in the West and has been involved in Reiki as it was kept in Japan. His own modern method (Gendai Reiki-ho) synthesizes the two streams into a complete whole. The book discusses many of the questions which are now being asked about Reiki and its evolution since Usui’s death in 1926, and resolves a number of points of historical significance. The book also introduces Reiki techniques as currently practised in Japan. (The FIRST
modern
Japanese Reiki book translated into English. This is one of the best
Reiki books published to date (IMHO). Sensei Hiroshi Doi presents
his combined Western and Japanese methods of Reiki in a modern day
style,
based on his own training with traditional Japanese masters, as well as
Radiance and Takata-sensei styles. Doi Sensei is the only known
published
master to have studied with a URR Gakkai chairperson, a Taketomi
lineage
sensei, as well as one of Dr. Hayashi's students. Doi-sensei
presents
the latest known facts of the origins of Reiki and also provides
interesting
new techniques from his Japanese Reiki training and his own personally
designed style. This book has been very well received in Japan, as well

a joy! The book also lists Reiki organizations worldwide, and tells a
bit
of Mari's story. She teaches and treats in the Czech Republic.

Notes: Like Rick says - important information for many folks who wish

I've internalized a good part of this teaching - that's something!
{Contains new information on Mikao Usui from 3 Japanese sources, including students of Kyozou Ogawa, one of Usui's students. Shows pictures of Usui's grave site and monument with a translation of the inscription of the monument. The rest of the book gives a general picture of Reiki, the levels, hand positions, a session, etc. It is well thought out and presented. RR}

Notes: A book by a student of Wanja Twan. Provides basic information

Reiki and its practise - hand positions, case studies, work with

principles etc etc. There is a nice feeling about this work as it keeps
an emphasis on lineage and the transfer of information.
(Of interest is the note Kasja makes about the Polish Catholic Nun, also a Reiki Master, who has a framed letter on her wall from the Pope, giving her permission to practice Reiki. RR) .

Notes: Starting at Christmas, 1985, Kevin Emery received channellings

Wei Chi, an entity who asserts that he created the symbols used in

five thousand years ago, in India. The book outlines Wei
Chi’s
Reiki system - one which focuses on a specific model for healing
sessions,
as well as learning Reiki through a mode of self-empowerment. Wei
Chi (and his channel - I do not believe it possible to separate the
two)
provide strong critiques of Reiki teaching as they currently view it
which,
perhaps, gets in the way of a good description of a more universal
philosophy
about Reiki as a personal practise.

in this volume - the esoterica seems, in fact, somewhat overwhelming.
Still,
people may find bits or chapters or information which does ring for
them
and could enhance their practise or their path.

Notes: Wow! Imagine Reiki meets the Artist's Way. The surtitle says,
"Your
21 Day Step By Step Guide to Relax, Open and Celebrate…",
and
indeed, the author does provide information, experiences, and lots of
exercises
(which will go much beyond 21 days) to open readers to think about
various
aspects of Reiki and their own lives. I was never happy, for instance,
in doing the "Course in Miracles" work (day by day), but the exercises
provided are more focused and more interesting to my practise and my
life
(and I'm not finished with them all by any means yet!). The
new-accounting
of the traditional story of Reiki is about the best I've seen - it's
non-judgmental
and pensive. There are also a lot of wonderful margin notes throughout
the text with quotes, or asides which really add to the work.

Notes: This is a basic text by a Reiki Master based in Devon, England.
What distinguishes it is that at any point in the book, there is a
glorious,
full-colour photo, picture or diagram which illustrates the text. The
colours
are stunning, and the nature photos for 'non-Reiki' diagrams are also
enhancing
of a sensual experience of reading a book.
(I agree with Walter's review - although the Reiki history presented is not the up-to-date version, this book sets a new standard for presentation in Reiki books. RR)

practises" and fairly 'strict' approaches which I've never actually
seen
before. They bear some consideration. One of these systems is where
Reiki
and "Marma" points intersect - the author provides descriptions of
these
52 points which seem to be related to accupuncture and meridian work.

Notes: Subtitled, "Rediscovered documents on the origins and

of the Reiki system as well as new aspects of the Reiki Energy." This
newest
book provides excerpts in translation from Mikao Usui's Handbook for
Reiki,
including questions and answers and poetry which Usui gave to his
students.
The author does a numerological and astrological analysis of Usui, but
also gives the history of Reiki as it was passed on in Japan. The rest
of the book provides some thinking about various issues of healing, and
recounts the author's path as he has come to Reiki and to be an
important
contributor to contemporary information on Reiki as it's been kept as a
tradition in Japan.
(I was very happy to see the first translation of the Usui Reiki Hikkei, but asked Arjava what happened to the Healing Guide Table. - apparently this somehow missed the publishing, but ended up in his next book. It is very moving to read Usui Sensei's actual explanation of Reiki, plus his bonus Q & A section. 14 of the 125 Gyosei - Meiji Emperor's poems - are also presented. RR)

I have to giggle every time I read the instructions for the night

the two days of a level I workshop: "Each participant is asked to take
not more than two alcoholic drinks and no artificial drugs other than
standard
medication before returning to the workshop the following day."
It
takes all kinds, and I bet it works!

are very beautiful and capture a spirit and feeling of Reiki which

out”.

Notes: Arjava Petter and his wife Chetna Kobayashi have provided a
translation
and new photos of Dr. Usui’s original hand positions for use
in Reiki healing. Also provided is a new context for the practice
of Reiki in the style traditionally kept in Japan. This includes
Gassho (hands in prayer position), Reiji-Ho (intuitively guided hands)
and other techniques which have not been part of the training in
‘western’
Reiki.
(Actually a continuation of the Usui Reiki Hikkei (workbook) that Arjava began in his previous book "Reiki: The Legacy of Dr. Usui". This one contains the Ryoho Shishin section (Guide to a Method of Healing) - Usui Sensei's hand positions for various body parts and illnesses (for the beginning Reiki student). Arjava has done an excellent job of photos and diagrams for the hand positons and body parts. My only regret is that he did not present the entire Hikkei as one booklet. Still, another wonderful addition to any Reiki collection. RR)

day, this book will be a well-thumbed and well-notated part of my
library.

Three of the more/most? prominent Reiki teachers come together to share many ideas and essays about a vast and comprehensive number of topics and issues in Reiki. These include Japanese Reiki techniques; discussions of symbols (including of the Reiki words themselves); Histories; English translations of the 125 Meiji Emperor’s waka (poems); cross-cultural information (how to behave in Japan) and as the sub-sub-title says, “Much More”. I find the work a little disjoint as the essays jump from author to author and each has his own writing style. (Lubeck and Petter provide good information on Japanese approaches to Reiki – Rand discusses Reiki in a modern/”western” millieu.) There is much to be studied in this volume – it feels quite comprehensive and will provide answers or starting points for discussion about many issues in contemporary Reiki practise. |

II and Reiki Master." This book is provided as a complete home study
course,
to be used with (or without) an accompanying video. Either way, Emerson
promises attunements and instruction without physically meeting the
student
(i.e. the purchaser of the book). The book is imbued with a sense of
justifying
making the information known freely and also allowing Reiki to evolve
and
change. Unfortunately, she does make factual errors (for instance,
citing
Usui as a Christian, and citing Takata's invention of hand positions),
and still clings to the notion of the necessity of exchange for healing
services. She states that she is unconcerned over the exact way that
symbols
are drawn, which is good because the drawings of the symbols in her
book
are certainly non-standard. Finally - although she states that she
honours
(her) students who've chosen this path and that "I am here for you",
there
is NO contact information provided for the author/teacher.

Notes: I am uncertain of Master Naharo's qualifications, but I
cannot
recommend this book - this is also an opinion on Amazon by someone
else, completely unrelated to me… The book claims that
by reading it and becoming familiar with 12 symbols (which do not
necessarily
look like any symbols known to most reiki practitioners) and committing
to the five principles (which are amazingly intact) that the reader can
self-initiate. The symbols are simply "wrong" and I have a
reasonable
tolerance for 'variant' symbols… The information is
dogmatic,
misleading and unique to this teacher and his writer. It does
give
the purported "marma" points from his previous book with Waites (1998)
which I still find of interest, but these are available in the other
book.
